Context

  • Live companion app built around real-time audience participation during the show
  • Voting, chat, feed updates, and notifications make the viewer part of the format itself
  • Extends the show into a repeat mobile ritual before, during, and after episodes

Live entertainment apps only become memorable when they move beyond promotion and actually change the viewing rhythm. In our view, Love Island did that by giving viewers a role inside the format itself.

Instead of treating mobile as a side channel, the app turned passive viewing into participation before, during, and after episodes. That is what gave the product its energy.

Core differentiator

What makes the app interesting is how tightly it is tied to the show format. Viewers could vote on favorite couples, villa decisions, and eventually the winning couple itself. That means the app was not simply reporting on the format. It was participating in the format.

Once that link is in place, the product becomes part of the viewing ritual rather than a separate content channel.

What the product delivers

  • In-app voting for show decisions and outcomes
  • Push notifications and a newsfeed with text, images, and video
  • Polls, quizzes, chat, reactions, and fan ranking mechanics
  • Selfie camera filters, merch shop, and contestant subscriptions
  • A built-in player for the `Der Morgen danach` podcast in later versions

Contribution note

Members of our team contributed directly to this product.

  • Mobile app delivery for live-show companion experiences
  • Feed-style content presentation and interaction surfaces
  • Push notification integration for episode and content updates

In this case study, we draw on hands-on experience with real-time participation, notifications, repeat audience engagement, and mobile products that are structurally tied to a live entertainment format.
